How to Choose the Right Headboard for Any Bedroom

Finding the right headboard to match your bedroom can be difficult. There are so many options available, and it may be a challenge to find just the right fit. Whether you are decorating your new home, or are staging a home for sale, there are a few helpful hints for finding the perfect headboard. Our top 5 decorating ideas for the perfect headboard harmony are:

1.  Consider upholstery. Upholstered headboards are obviously more comfortable for those sitting in bed reading or watching television, but choosing the right fabric can be tricky. Cotton blends, microsuede, or leather are functional and durable options for headboards that will retain color and texture.

2. Size Matters. Most people are unaware of the dimensions of their mattresses, and may forget to measure wall space in their bedroom before shopping for the perfect headboard. The standard size for headboards is 48-inches tall. For those who want a taller space or use Euro pillows, choose a headboard that is at least 55-inches tall. The trick to the perfect size headboard is knowing your measurements. Measure the distance between the top of the mattress and the floor, and then the distance between your waist and the top of your head. Add those numbers together, add a few extra inches for measure, and that is the best height for your headboard.

3. Contrast is Okay. If you found a wooden headboard you love but it does not match the other wood tones in your bedroom, do not worry. As long as the wood hues are in the same family, your furniture does not have to match identically. Choose complementary yet contrasting similar shades, such as yellow tones or cherry tones that will not clash.

4. Know your Depth. Headboards can range from a few inches up to a foot in depth between the wall and mattress. If you are decorating a small room, consider a slim wall-mounted headboard, or mounted squares designed for walls.

5. Let Light In. If your bed is in front of a window, you do not have to sacrifice the natural light in order to have a harmonious headboard. Alternatives to a solid headboard include wrought iron, slatted wood, or see through panels.
With these decorating ideas, anyone can find the perfect headboard for any bedroom. The right headboard can bring a harmonious, relaxing feel to the bedroom space, and creates a unique personalized touch.
