The 2017 Color of the Year is Bold and Brilliant

Every year, Benjamin Moore unveils their “color of the year”. In recent years, the yearly selections were neutral, with creams, beiges, and grays dominating the decorating world. While the name may suggest a neutral hue, Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2017, “Shadow”, is anything but bland. In fact, Shadow is more akin to a rich, smoky amethyst than a neutral.

For 2017, a dominant theme in decorating is bold colors. Drama and personality abound with colors like Shadow and the myriad possibilities of jewel tones to accent it with. Benjamin Moore has a recommended list of 22 colors that will compliment Shadow, making any home decorating process a little bit simpler.

Bold Design Ideas

Instead of limiting your use of colors like Shadow to your walls, consider using it as an accent with the following ideas for creative ways to incorporate bold colors in your home:

  • Paint doors, door frames, or railings a bold color
  • Use bold or dark colors for the backing on shelving
  • Paint your ceilings a bright or bold color that compliments furnishings
  • Paint the floor and walls of your space two shades of the same bold color
  • Don’t be afraid to paint adjacent rooms different colors that complement one another
  • Use texture or a pattern on your walls, and match decorative accents in the same color

If you are planning to sell your home, you may be intimidated by bold colors. Stay on-trend with what potential homebuyers are looking for by staging your home. A well staged home can help buyers envision themselves in the space. Don’t be afraid of color and texture!
