5 Tips for Home Decorating with Layering

Living room home staging

Layering in fashion is one of the best tools to transition between seasons, mix up your wardrobe, and infuse your personal style into how you dress.  Did you know that layering is also a helpful tool in decorating your home? In terms of home decorating, layering is an excellent tool to improve texture, depth, visual interest, add a feeling of abundance, and offer you the ability to add or take away as you like. With layering, the sky is pretty much the limit to your creativity.

Check out These 5 Helpful Ways to Layer

Layering is not complicated, but many people are unsure of where or how to start. The home staging and design pros at Virtually Staging Properties offer these five tips for home decorating using layering that are sure to inspire.

  1. Color: The foundation of most home decorating projects is the color palette. Bright colors have a lot of impact, but offer more visual appeal when balanced by neutral colors. Place bright colored pillows for example with light neutrals or white ones, or layer different shades of the same color to highlight different textures on a couch or on the bed.
  2. Patterns: When you mix different patterns, a room can come alive with personality and dimension. As long as there is some unifying element, such as a particular color, there are really no rules for layering patterns- get creative!
  3. Texture: Layering textures is especially effective if there is a juxtaposition between items, such as hard and soft, rustic and shiny, etc. For example, mixing a rustic natural table with a bright modern centerpiece, layering different styles of photo frame on your walls, or grouping several items that are the same color but different textures.
  4. Furniture: Layering furniture can add a great deal of charm to your home, and can be a fun project for you and your family. Layer furniture that ordinarily would not go together, such as a Mid-Century piece accented by more ornate French designs. No matter how old or new your home is, or your personal aesthetic, layering furniture allows you freedom in creativity and personality.
  5. Old and New: You can also layer when decorating your home by using old and new items together. For example, layer vintage bookends, vases, or photo frames with modern pieces, brightly colored accents, and unusual color pairings.

Using these five tips can certainly set you on your way to layering success. When you start layering in your home, don’t forget to add in your personal style in accents like throws, mirrors, curtains, or pillows. No matter what you choose to layer, what matters most is that your home feels like a comfortable, inviting oasis for you and your family.
